A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January rose in the hours before Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A particular user, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.

Yet the odds had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and surged in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on inside information," stated an industry expert.

A small number of other traders also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A bill put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting arena.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
